We Cherish Our Scars

In lightness, in darkness
In fighting injustice
We turn to each other
We push each other away

I was born unblemished
Full of wonder and the joy of life
My mother she guarded me
Until that boy at the playground punched out my lights
And I realized nobody
Could protect me from my life

        We spend some time
        We break some hearts
        We love then heal
        And we cherish our scars

I grew up, I messed up
I came back, I had some kids of my own
I've tried not to shield them
And maybe sometimes I've been a bit too hard

And I've tried to hide my dark side
I haven't always done so well

When I'm tired and lonely
Feeling like my guitar is my only friend
I sing to my dark side
Maybe try to help it find a little light

        We spend some time
        We break some hearts
        We love then heal
        And we cherish our scars

        We spend some time
        We break some hearts
        We love then heal
And we cherish our scars, oh how we
Oh how we cherish our scars, oh how we
Oh how we cherish our scars
