Life is a Circle

You've spent too many hours on pathos and fear
Only to find yourself somewhere out here
On a Tennessee road with no home and no goals
And you find that your failures are your only success

You look into the eyes of your sons and you see
The things I don't like have all come from me
But you've spent too many hours hating yourself
So you love them with all of your faults just the same

You think of the lovers you've lost through the years
You see you've spent too many hours and tears
Trying to find just the right thing to say
Or even the wrong thing in just the right way

When all that you needed you already know
That you follow your heart but survive by your soul
That people don't always do what you want them to
And all you can do is sit back and watch them

So you mix a little bitterness in with your dreams
You stop making others the source of your pride
You see that life is a circle though not very round
And you only look back to collect what you've found

You've spent thirty-five years seeking somebody else
Only to find you've been chasing yourself
And you wish that you'd seen it a long time before
That people love the way they want to be

And no matter how much you give or you take
Nor promises made nor the smiles that you fake
Can make anyone happy if they already are
And we all end up losers in a fight for control

So you gather up all of the things that you know
That you follow your heart but survive by your soul
That people don't always do what you want them to
And all you can do is sit back and watch them

So you mix a little bitterness in with your dreams
You stop making others a source of your pride
You see that life is a circle though not very round
And you only look back to collect what you've found

That life is a circle though not very round
Life is a circle though not very round
Life is a circle though not very round
Life is a circle though not very round
Life is a circle though not very round
