Could Have Been

Before the dawn broke
I'm wide awake lying next to you
And as the sun woke
Spreading soft shadows on your cheek
I felt a power
Rising, swelling, breaking like waves

It could have been your love crashing over me
It could have been my heart bursting at the seams
It could have been the way you moved on me like grass in the wind
Or the perfect harmony of sweet skin on skin
        It could have been

Smiles on the hillside
Exchanged like children learning how to see
Spirits of the mountain
On woodsmoke-scented, tropic aloe breeze
And I felt a power
Rising, swelling, breaking like waves

It could have been your love crashing over me
It could have been my heart bursting at the seams
It could have been the way you moved on me like grass in the wind
Or the perfect harmony of sweet skin on skin
        It could have been

Before the sun set
Slashing pink ribbons across the sky
A mist-covered volcano
Rose like a poem from the sea
And I felt a power
Rising, swelling, breaking like waves

It could have been your love crashing over me
It could have been my heart bursting at the seams
It could have been the way you moved on me like grass in the wind
Or the perfect harmony of sweet skin on skin
        It could have been
